CHEM 230L - Organic Chemistry I Laboratory

Prerequisites, CHEM 150, CHEM 150L. Corequisite, CHEM 230. A laboratory course designed to illustrate and reinforce CHEM 230 lecture concepts and provide a sense of discovery and real-life application through guided hands-on experience. Students explore standard laboratory techniques to isolate and purify organic molecules (extraction, distillation, recrystallization, chromatography) and modern instrumentation used for organic substance characterization and structure determination (IR, NMR, GC-MS, UV-vis, and polarimetry). Students build a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge and skills applicable to a variety of STEM and pre-medical career plans. Letter grade. With consent, this course may be repeated for credit. (Offered every semester.) 1 credit
