CHEM 230 - Organic Chemistry I

Prerequisites, CHEM 150, CHEM 150L. Corequisite, CHEM 230L or previous credit for CHEM 230L. Students are introduced to the new “language” of organic chemistry where they will draw carbon-containing organic compounds in several different representations in order to evaluate their physical and chemical properties and reactivities. Characteristic alkane, alkyl halide, alcohol, and carbonyl compounds are discussed with reference to theories, nomenclature, key reactions, preparations, and spectroscopic analysis. Lecture. Letter grade. With consent, this course may be repeated for credit. (Offered every semester.) 3 credits
