MUS 134 - Theory II

Prerequisite, pass MUS 133  with a “C” or better, or pass music theory placement exam. Prerequisite for B.M. composition major, pass MUS 133  with a “B” or better, or pass music theory placement exam. Overview of chromaticism including review of secondary functions: Modulation, mode mixture, Neapolitan triad, augmented sixth chords. Introduction to cadences, phrases, periods, simple part-forms, invertible counterpoint, 2-part invention, 3-part invention. Continuing exercises in harmonic analysis, 4-part voice leading, and composition. MUS 134 can be met by passing the appropriate section of the music theory placement exam. (Offered spring semester.) 2 credit
