Acceptance to the B.A. in Theatre is by interview or portfolio review. The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre degree is designed for students interested in a broad range of training in live performance, theatre history, dramaturgy, directing, technology, production practices, and arts leadership. The B.A. Theatre degree also enables students to double major, thereby enhancing their academic experience by engaging in interdisciplinary pathways and building a second complementary skillset. B.A. Theatre students gain access to the entertainment industry through completing coursework, attending professional productions, participating in study abroad experiences, and pursuing career development and networking opportunities throughout the Southern California region and beyond. B.A. Theatre majors are prepared for a multi-faceted, creative career as skilled collaborators, informed artists, and social changemakers within their communities and the performaing arts industry.

Students are admitted to the B.A. in Theatre program through an interview or portfolio review before entrance to the Department of Theatre at Chapman. Currently enrolled students may interview as internal transfers in the fall semester of each year and should contact the Department of Theatre B.A. Theatre Program Director, Dr. Jocelyn Buckner,  for more information. Transfer students are advised that the B.A. in Theatre degree cannot be completed in less than three years and may require additional time to complete if they plan to double major.

The ideal BA Theatre student:

1. Is an independent thinker interested in pursuing a personalized education and discovering a unique scholarly/creative path through the BA Theatre core curriculum and elective offerings.

2. Is an entrepreneurial artist/scholar dedicated to participating in all aspects of the Department of Theatre while pursuing specialized production and research opportunities.

3. Is an interdisciplinary individual passionate about double majoring or otherwise forging connections between the BA Theatre degree and another area of academic interest at Chapman.

Program Learning Outcomes for B.A. in Theatre.

Students pursuing the B.A. in Theatre are required to:

  • Earn an overall GPA of 2.000 for all required major courses.
  • Complete all courses in the major for a letter grade.
  • Pass courses in the major with a “C” (not a “C-“) or higher.
  • Complete a minimum of 21 credits from upper-division courses in the major.
  • Complete the senior seminar requirements TH 498A  and TH 498B .
