TCHR 405 - Literacy and Learning II: Grades 4-8


(Same as TCHR 505.) Prerequisite, admission to Teacher Education. This course is designed to give teacher candidates an understanding of the elements of language and literacy learning for students in grades 4-8. Candidates will learn strategies of structured literacy, including direct and explicit instruction that is systematic, sequential, and multisensory. This course recognizes the relationship between reading and writing to broader theoretical and practical notions of multiple literacies, multiliteracies, media literacy, and critical literacy. The course pays special attention to students from diverse racial, linguistic, and socio-economic, and other areas of difference and the material consequences of literacy acquisition. Students will participate in fieldwork. Letter grade. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
