AMST 102 - Introduction to Asian American Studies


This course provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Asian American Studies. We will begin by exploring conceptual and theoretical approaches to race and ethnicity in the United States. We will then examine major issues in Asian American society and analyze them from historical, humanistic, political, and social perspectives. Topics may include immigration and refugee policy, multiracial families and adoption, gender and sexuality, community formation, citizenship, empire and settler-colonialism, politics and activism, multiethnic and multiracial relations, US foreign policy, transnational and transpacific ties, and anti-Asian hate. The class will include a special emphasis and engagement with Asian American communities in southern California.  Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered every year.) 3 credits
