PHYS 452 - Quantum Mechanics II

Prerequisites, PHYS 451 and PHYS 310. Students learn how to apply quantum mechanics to systems of many particles and understand the dynamics of atoms interacting with the electromagnetic field. Students learn general concepts, methods, analytic tools and advanced problem-solving skills. Topics include atoms in magnetic fields, addition of angular momentum, identical particles, emission and absorption of radiation, perturbation theory, the variational method, and the WKB approximation. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered spring semester, alternate years.) 3 credits
