HSCI 430 - Community Health Equity

Prerequisites, HSCI 101 , health sciences major. Social and environmental inequities (e.g. inequitable access to healthy food) manifest in public health disparities (e.g. obesity and diabetes) in disadvantaged communities. In this context, public health scholars have increasingly advocated that community-based participatory research and community organizing are potent approaches for redressing public health disparities. Thus, this course takes an interdisciplinary approach to developing an understanding of community research and action toward community empowerment and public health equity. Students will learn a broad range of theoretical and methodological approaches to working with community residents and community-based organizations concerned with public health disparities. [DEI] Letter grade. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits
