AMST 280 - Asian American Media


This course chronicles the rise of Asian American media and the role of the 1960s civil rights movement into the construction of Asian American identity today. It covers print media from magazines and newspapers, to film, television, and social media presentations. This course will examine content about Asians in American and Asian Americans from both internal and external representational forms and how that relates to the construction of identity and racial stereotypes. It will examine self-representation, stereotypes, yellowface, media and gender issues, and issues of race and identity. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. With consent, this course may be repeated for credit. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
