MACI 464 - English Language Acquisition and Issues of Diversity


Prerequisite, admission to the MACI track or special education credential program. This course explores current theories on language acquisition and the practical applications of theoretical knowledge as they pertain to K - 12 and special education. The course focuses on issues involved in first and second language acquisition, assessment and literacy development from a socio-psycholinguistic point of view, including socio-cultural and political factors. It addresses the State English Language Development (ELD) standards, assessment, planning for literacy and content area instruction and program options. Students in the course will examine the differences between a language disability and language acquisition and how to address the differences in the IEP assessment process. Some sections of MACI 464 may be taught with EDUC 564. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits
