Spanish, B.A. Suggested 4-Year Plan

How to Use your 4-year Plan

  • This is a suggested 4-year plan for your major and not meant to replace regular academic advising.
  • The plan is flexible and can be changed to accommodate studying abroad, a second major/minor(s) or AP/IB credits.
  • You should work with an academic advisor to develop a plan that meets your interests and goals.
  • You must earn a minimum of 120 credits to graduate and 33 major-specific credits to earn a B.A. in Spanish.
  • Transfer students and those looking to add B.A. in Spanish as a second major should contact the program advisor for degree planning.
  • If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Polly Hodge at phodge@chapman.edu.

Suggested 4-year Plan

  • We encourage you to select your General Education (GE) and minor/second major/Themed Inquiry/Honors program around the plan below. Once you fill your GE classes around your major classes, you will have a better idea of space remaining each semester when choosing your Exploration Focus.
  • To be enrolled full time, you must take at least 12 credits a semester.
  • In order to graduate within 4 years, we recommend you take 30 credits a year.
  • The BA in Spanish is 11 classes (33 credits). Of the 11 classes, 10 must be taken at the 300 or 400 level (upper-division) and SPAN 202 counts as the only 200 level course acceptable. Six advanced classes (4 Literature: 375, 376, 377, 378 and 2 Linguistics, 396, 440) are required for the major as well as the capstone SPAN 498 (Junior/Senior Seminar). Students then choose 4 classes from a variety of elective courses depending on their interest areas.

Year 1

  • Students have the option to enroll in a SPAN travel course during interterm or summer as soon as Year 1 but also during any subsequent year. Each interterm classes are offered; the Argentina Interterm Abroad program typically offers SPAN 101, 102, 201, 343 and 393. On campus, typically SPAN 102, SPAN 345 and an Advanced Literature or Linguistics course are offered. Each summer, SPAN 101a, SPAN 102a, SPAN 201a and SPAN 345a are offered as part of the travel seminar to Barcelona or Madrid.
