Film Music, Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Performing Arts

The Minor in Film Music is designed to give students an understanding of how music works in film-what music does and how it does it-as well as the basics of music theory and how to relate music to picture. Students may choose courses that create a technical track, focusing on composing music for film and the technology needed for film composition or courses that create a film music studies track, focusing on the history and aesthetics of film music.

All undergraduate students of any major are eligible to declare this minor, including all music majors except students earning a B.A. in Music (B.A. in Music students are not eligible for this minor.)

Students passing out of MUS 133 MUS 134  by placement exam, must substitute an equal number of credits (as were passed by exam) from the electives section of the program.

Admissions process: Contact conservatory chair for an interview to determine if it is possible to complete the minor in time to graduate. If it is, you will be placed on the pre-minor list. After being placed on this list, you will be eligible to submit the form declaring your music minor.

If a student chooses the Film Music Composition track, it is highly recommended that the student take MUS 130 - Fundamentals of Aural Skills  for 2 credits either with MUS 133  or with MUS 134 .

A minimum of 12 credits must be selected from upper-division courses.

The following policies are the same for film music minors as required for music majors. See General Information for all Music Programs , for details.

  • Transfer requirement.
  • Minimum grade requirements.
  • Course re-take policy.
