Program Learning Outcomes for B.A. in Political Science.
Students pursuing the B.A. in Political Science are required to:
- Maintain at least a 2.000 grade point average in the major.
- Earn a grade of “C” or higher in major courses.
- Complete all courses in the major for a letter grade.
- Complete one of our capstone courses (POSC 410 or POSC 420), or POSC 499 with prior approval from department chair.

Core Requirements (9 credits)
Emphasis Requirement (15 credits)
Complete five courses, four of which must be 300-level or above, within one emphasis:
- Political Economy and Policy
- American Politics
- Law and Justice
- Quantitative and Analytical Political Science
- Security, Peace, and Conflict
(Note that students may use their elective credits to complete a second emphasis if they so choose. A maximum of three credits may be shared between two emphases.) Electives (15 credits)
At least 12 credits must be 300-level or above. Capstone (3 credits)

This emphasis unites the parts of the curriculum that focus attention on policy studies with those that emphasize economic foundations of power relationships between state and non-state actors. American Politics
This emphasis includes courses on political behavior, public opinion, campaigns and elections, and political institutions (e.g., interest groups, parties, legislatures) in the United States, several of which also provide students with a comparative lens through which to view American institutions and practices. Law and Justice
This emphasis offers an exploration of political theory, law, and legal systems with a focus on how we construct and apply fundamental concepts such as justice, equality, liberty, and democracy. Quantitative and Analytical Political Science
This emphasis provides students with the analytical and methodological tools to conduct advance research inquiries in Political Science. Security, Peace, and Conflict
This emphasis explores the various forces and dynamics that structure relations between and among states, international organizations, and non-state actors. |
