The Minor in Language and Literacy prepares the candidate with specific content preparation necessary for a career that includes the teaching of English at the elementary or middle grades levels or intensive writing in English in a community education setting. Future high school English teachers who are integrated educational studies majors in the schools emphasis area are strongly encouraged to choose English as a second major or to choose English as their minor.
Minor is not open to English majors in literature, rhetoric and cultural studies area of study; creative writing majors; or IES majors with a community emphasis and an English and communication focus area.
Students pursuing the Minor in Language and Literacy are required to:
- Take all courses in the minor for a letter grade.
- Complete all courses with a “C-” or higher.
- Ensure that 9 credits are upper division and that at least 6 credits of the upper-division credits are completed in residency. (Note that graduation requirements require 42 upper division credits to be earned overall.)
- Complete 12 unique credits in the minor that are not duplicated in any other major or minor program in which the student is enrolled.
