Under the guidance of faculty advisors, English majors complete a program in one of two areas of study: literature, rhetoric and cultural studies or journalism. Each student is required to take the 18-credit English core, in addition to a 27-28 credit area of study. Students earning a B.A. in English may not double major in the B.F.A. in Creative Writing.

Students pursuing the B.A. in English are required to:

  • Maintain at least a 2.000 grade point average in the major.
  • Complete 21 credits from upper-division courses in the major.
  • Complete the Senior Seminar requirement ENG 498A  or ENG 498B

At least 18 of the 27 elective credits must be at the upper-division level and at least six credits must be at the 400-level. Although many courses satisfy elective requirements in multiple areas (in the diversity, pre-1850, post-1850 and additional elective categories), elective courses cannot be double-counted.

journalism area of study (28 credits)


Journalism prepares students for a career in the news media. Journalism students are encouraged to minor in history, American studies, foreign languages, music, religion, art history, peace studies or political science.
