GD 410 - AI Research Through Design


Building on foundational work on research through arts and design at the Royal College of Arts, this class prepares students as AI design researchers, that is, emerging interdisciplinary figures who conceptually understand AI design principles and technical abilities, apply reflexive methods from the humanities and social sciences, and employ creative practices from arts and design. The course aims to prepare students to reflexively  prototype” futures that are accountable, inclusive and sustainable, by using art and design practices as primary research methods. The course is offered in three modules: (1) History of Artificial Intelligence, (2) Materials of Artificial Intelligence, and (3) Designs of Artificial Intelligence. The course integrates targeted lectures with student-led seminars, individual and group projects, workshops and field work. Relevant readings will be provided according to the theme of the year. Letter grade. (Offered every year.) 3 credits
