ENG 345A - Gender in Victorian England

Prerequisite, ENG 256 .  Though Victorian connotes staid, conventional, and repressed to the popular imagination, the rich, lively, and often irreverent literature of the British Victorian period (1832-1900) contradicts this misperception. The British Victorians had more in common with 21st century Americans than one might imagine. Curriculum will be built around this period’s greatest literary form, the novel, but will also include study of representative essays, plays, poetry, and a focus on gender expectations of Victorian women and of men. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
