ENG 444F - Pedagogies of Freedom: Paulo Freire and bell hooks


This course engages with the work and theory of Paulo Freire and bell hooks, who probe psychological and cultural barriers to personal liberation and have influenced progressive education all over the world. Freire presented development as freedom, questioning the “scientific” methods of analysis and objectivity that inform education, challenging the mechanization of intellectual work which can lead to a reductionist view of the act of knowing. hooks practiced an engaged pedagogy-holistic, committed to well-being, and love. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
