ENG 344A - The English Gothic Novel

Prerequisite, ENG 256. This course will focus on the development of the English Gothic novel from the mid-eighteenth century through the mid-nineteenth century. Beginning with Horace Walpole’s foundational novel, The Castle of Otranto, students will trace the development of what has become known as Gothic fiction and look carefully at recurring settings, characters, tropes, and themes. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
