ENG 224 - Introduction to Latinx Literature

This course is an introduction to Latinx Literature. While Latinxs are people of Latin American descent who live in the United States, the term encapsulates a broad range of racial, cultural, and political backgrounds. Latinxs have played a central role in the United States since its inception. Both colonized subjects and representatives from the other (Latin) America, Latinxs have deeply influenced the history, politics, and culture of the United States. While Latinx literature draws on literary traditions that span more than 400 years, the focus will be on more contemporary forms of Latinx literature. In this course, students will examine how “Latinx” unites such diverse groups of people while also examining the historical specificity of these groups. Particular attention will be paid to the shared histories of colonization, migration, and marginalization that inform Latinx Literature. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
