HUM 301 - Decolonial Methodologies


Prerequisite, enrollment in an interdisciplinary minor. This course focuses on approaches to conducting research amongst underserved, overlooked, or marginalized populations and communities. It will have a focus on emancipatory approaches to scholarship, as well as on community- and relationship-based research. The course will be a theory- and practice-based exploration of justice-based research that is attentive structural power and historical exclusion.  Students will be required to craft their own research approach through a Methodology Dossier, or a detailed document that coheres each student’s own philosophical and ethical commitments to research design and deployment of appropriate methods. The course will expose students to foundational concepts such as worldview, ontology, epistemology, and axiology, as well as examples of critical, community- and justice-based, and participatory research. Letter grade. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
