AMST 444T - Asian American Film

(Same as FS 444T.) Prerequisite, AMST 102 or consent of instructor  A critical, historical analysis of Asian American filmmaking through lecture, discussion, and viewing of films and film excerpts. This course will examine content about Asians in America and Asian Americans from both internal and external representational films and how that relates to the construction of identity and racial stereotypes. It will mainly focus on examining the self-representation by Asian-American filmmakers; however, it will also include a survey history of Asian-American representations in the US films to gain a critical understanding of how film and media have contributed to creating stereotypes, and the “yellowface”. Through these explorations, the course will engage with the issues of media and gender, and those of race and identity. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
