PHYS 430 - Thermal and Statistical Physics I

Prerequisite, PHYS 201 or PHYS 207. Students learn the principles and applications of classical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Topics include probability and statistics, two-state systems, entropy, laws of thermodynamics, ideal gases, calorimetry, heat engines and refrigerators, and equilibrium statistical ensembles of classical systems. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered fall semester, alternate years.) 3 credits
