PHYS 351 - Philosophy and Foundations of Quantum Mechanics

(Same as PHIL 351 .) Students learn the basic principles of quantum mechanics and the reasons why the meaning of the theory, and what it says about reality, are so controversial.  Students critically read relevant literature, analyze arguments, and engage with conceptual problems about quantum theory. Topics covered in this course include Schrödinger’s cat, quantum superposition, the formalism of quantum mechanics, two path interference, qubits, the no-cloning theorem, quantum entanglement, quantum teleportation, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox, the measurement problem, nonlocality, and interpretations of quantum mechanics, such as the many-worlds interpretation. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered spring semester, alternate years.) 3 credits
