HIST 379 - Queer Politics in Africa

This course is intended to provide both an introduction to queer theory, as well as to engage with the question of its relevance in Africa. The class will explore how “African sexualities” have become sites of intense local and international debate and tension. It will use struggles for sexual self- determination among queer communities on the continent as a prism through which to consider broader questions about the impact of the colonial legacy, the consolidation and deconstruction of postcolonial national identities, rights and claims for justice, the aspirations and anxieties of postcolonial elites etc. These questions will be studied contextually, with topics in many weeks focusing on a single area case study, or a comparison of two or more country-contexts. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. With consent, this course may be repeated for credit. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
