MATH 380 - Introduction to Abstract Algebra

Prerequisite, MATH 250. A first course on algebraic structures, including semigroups, monoids and groups, with many examples, some basic concepts and results about these structures (subalgebras, homomorphisms, Cayley’s theorem, Lagrange’s Theorem, isomorphism theorems, modular arithmetic) and applications to error-correcting codes and cryptography Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. (Offered fall semester.) 3 credits
